Not exactly a bite, but experience of the month perhaps. Ally swims with a whale shark near Steep Point, Shark Bay. An experience of a life time, keep it with you forever Ally.
Frank’s mulloway pulled out from amongst a school of trevally earns him Bite of the Month. Caught during the last Kalbarri Offshore & Angling Club monthly comp. Frank was well please with his personal best mulloway to date.
Mohamed Al Hameli hails from Abu Dhabi in the UAE and he and 3 mates headed north with their bait and hand lines drifting along some of the pre programmed spots on my GPS. They landed a few, mostly undersize fish, a couple of small sharks and then this 8.8kg red emperor for Mohamed.
This big blue marlin gave Greg Gardiner, the bite of his life. Greg was fishing out from Tandabidi on the West side of the Exmouth peninsular in my 6.1m boat this month. Taking him an hour and a half on stand-up tackle; a great fish from a small boat. Well done Greg!
Tu Pham had a great day out early this month picking up mackerel on the troll and then this surprise mulloway from an inshore reef. Nice fish Tu!
First time out fishing for Shelbie
Rystenberg was a full on event with her being handed a rod with a
screaming drag. With a few pointers and coaching in the lift and wind
technique this 15kg mackerel came to the gaff. Spoilt for life
Shelbie!
Peter Callisto has been the Bite of the Month before with a red emperor caught out from Kalbarri. But he gets it again this month for this 10kg red emperor caught from my 7.8m boat caught at Gnaraloo this month. He had a great trip landing lots of good fish, in less than perfect conditions.
Robert Jamil has fished Kalbarri before, but this time over a 3 day trip caught some very good fish. This big coral trout was the best fish for the trip and was part of a double header with a big red-throat emperor. Great fish Robert.
Ishka Smith hold up his 18kg yellow-fin tuna for bite of the month. Fishing with mates, Isiah Pedler, Eden Willis, Liam Sanford and Stephanie Pool, they spent the day in the 7.8m boat catching tuna, one after the other. On my advice they took a spin rod and Ishka cast a lead baitfish pattern to a school of big tuna crashing around the boat. Luckily he had an outfit spooled with 15kg line, but it still took him 40 minutes to land it.
Peter Callisto gets bite of the month for March, landing this red emperor from my 7.8m boat in 50 metres of water north west of the river mouth this month. Fishing with mates he was well please to have the best fish of the day, knocking off, Paul’s, dhuie right at the end of the days fishing.
Short of any big fish this month, I have to give it to Sue who fished extremely well during the last Kalbarri Offshore & Angling Club comp day. With perfect conditions, Sue trolled small lures on 2kg mono line landing a narrow-barred mackerel and then a bonus spotted mackerel, enabling her to land another narrow-barred, which she did, to make up her bag limit of narrow-barred, and went on to win the game section.
Julien Etiennette was reluctant to grab the rod when it went off, but we all shouted “Take it!” Julien has not fished much at all and had only previously landed his first fish earlier that morning, but this one turned out to be a lot bigger than expected. A few instructions on the pump and wind technique from wife Rebecca and the fish was soon to the gaff using my Stella 8000 and 50lb braid. Good first time fishing result.
Nathan was surprisingly quick to grab the rod when it started to scream during a troll just off Red Bluff this month. 11 year old Nathan Yates and father Richard, hired the 7.8m boat and Nathan landed this 16kg mackerel after a 45 minute fight. A very good fish for Kalbarri waters. Well done Nathan! Nathan put on his Christmas hat for the occasion!
Nick Biggs got more than he expected this month landing a very respectable yellow-fin tuna out from the Sandpatch late this month. Trolling with his Father, Ian & Ian’s mate Davo Ryan they got a quadruple hook-up that caused a bit of chaos on board but they landed two tuna, released a big shark and lost the forth. Nick’s yellow-fin went 10kg on the lie detector.
Daniel Sykes got the bite of the month landing this 81cm snapper from my 6.5m boat just out of the river mouth this month. Caught during the 2 month demersal closure, he had to let it go. It will be waiting for you next time you come up Daniel!
Murray from Cohuna, Victoria gets bite of the month with this great dhuie caught at the end of August well north of Kalbarri. Murray was lucky to be invited when a mate of mine pulled out from the trip & Murray just happened to drop in to say g’day. Caught in 16m of crystal clear water, this brute put on a hell of a fight.
On a trip up to Gnaraloo Station, Andrew had a big hook-up on this mackerel. Just as the fish came to the boat, it was monstered by a big shark leaving behind 4kgs of mackerel head! Crew member Sab holds the sharked mackerel head. The group had a great week landing a wide variety of fish.
Picking a nice day, Ashley Van Viersen, Charlie Mesena, Janet Schwarz and myself went a long way north looking for good fish. Finding a spot and as the easterly was quite strong, put the anchor down and awaited the fish. A steady stream of fish came aboard and were returned waiting for the big one. When it came it was on Ashley's rod, this 13.2kg dhuie was the result. Well done Ashley.
This big blue marlin grabbed Daniel's Jenk's trolled lure, snapping him into action to claim this month's spot. Trolling in 500m of water out from Exmouth early this month this blue marlin took lots of line and jumped numerous times until brought to the boat where a quick photo was taken and successfully released.
Steven Lenz’s 8.5kg pink snapper caught along the cliffs is a worthy fish winning “Bite of the Month” this month. Sitting on anchor half way to the end of the southern cliffs Steven and partner Rhonda with the kids had a ball catching a procession of fish before this 8.5kg pink snapper took his unweighted mulie on his 10kg spin outfit. Great fish Steven.
Bite of the month goes to Cesere Mercuri, catching this 14kg yellow-fin tuna on a flick rod and 14lb braid. A lead bait fish pattern lure was cast to a school of yellow-fin hanging around the boat. The hook-up was followed by a searing run peeling all the braid off & down to near the end of the mono backing. Chasing with the boat he managed to get most back and then an agonising 30 minutes later the tail wrapped tuna was gaffed aboard. A great catch on light gear.
An unusual catch for Aisha Li this month. Aisha was anchored with her boyfriend David south of the cliffs with a burley trail going and having a lot of fun catching skippy. Interspersed were the odd cod, wrasse etc but then this surf parrot fish bent her rod down, making her day! Great fighting and eating fish.
Jason Agrela holds up his great catch during the Kalbarri Ultra Light Competition. Trolling 4kg line out on the 9 mile this 7.3kg dolphinfish snatched the RMG Scorpion 125 and put on a spectacular aerial display during the dogged fight to the boat. Nice fish winning the 4kg line class section over the week end.
Brendon
Shinnick and mate Brett picked a good day to get out this month,
heading north to around Bald Face in the 5.3m boat. Picking up a
couple of snapper they chanced upon a nice coral lump, only small
with very little fish showing but too good not to see who was living
there. First fish from it being a Breaksea Cod then this very nice
coral Trout making his day.
Son Jared deserves it this month. Hooking up to a sail on a garfish set for a mackerel, Jared fought the fish on inadequate gear for a couple of hours. His second sailfish took both baits set for sails, both circle hooks setting which saw both Paul and Jared fight the fish to the boat. It had no chance this time and came in fairly quickly.
JUNE 2009 Norm
Hopkins was back in Kalbarri fishing with the same group as last year
and had all the luck. Catching most of the good fish, this big
baldchin groper was a prize catch of the trip earning him Bite of the
Month. Well done Merv.
MAY 2009 Bite of
the Month must surly go to Paul Youngman with his marlin taken during
our Exmouth trip this month. Without a fish for the whole 10 days,
and at 8 minutes to the agreed 6pm lines in, he took his hat off,
threw it on the ground and said. “All right, that’s it, might as well
reel in and head back!” We all said, no, no wait; we still have 8
minutes left! Four minutes later he was hooked up to this fish, which
gave him a thorough work out on his Riobi Safari and 50lb braid
outfit!
APRIL 2009 “Bite of the month” this month was hotly
contested, with a few fish vying for the honours. The biggest tuna
for the month goes to Chris Ruck and his partner. With little
experience in the way of trolling, Chris hired the 5.3m boat, 2 rods
and bought 2 lures. I told him to go to the Sand Patch, put the lures
out and hold on. Whilst free spooling the first lure out at the Sand
Patch it was munched by something, the reel exploded into a birds
nest and broke off. The lure had lasted 30 seconds! The second lure
went out resulting in a couple of mackerel and the third fish turned
out to be this 25kg yellow-fin which they took turns during the 1
hour
fight. Great fish for a first time troller.
MARCH 2009 Daniel
Kwek’s 20kg tuna makes the grade this month. A superb fish trolled up
while we were sounding for a likely looking spot to bottom fish. It
sure gave him a workout on his Saltiga and 50lb braid.
JANUARY 2009 Wayne
Matthews was in the right spot at the right time and was invited out
on a trip in the 7.8m boat. It was a slow bite day and only a few
fish landed but he pulled two dhuies as shown. Not big fish but
personally his best fish to date.
DECEMBER 2008
Big pink snapper this month for Andrew Martin who hired the 5.3m
boat and went out for a troll with girlfriend Bree. He had a number
of hits on his lures with this 8kg pink snapper rising to take a
Halco Laser Pro as they were drifting after breaking off on what we
assume was a very big tuna. A great fish on a lure Andrew! Unfortunately the day was
cut short when all his lures were lost and had to come back in!
NOVEMBER 2008
A big bite this month for Stan Seow. Stan was the last person on the
boat to catch a fish, but his patience paid off when his bait was
wolfed down by this over a metre estuary cod. His braid spooled
Riobi Safari outfit groaned & sang and after considerable time
got it to the surface. A quick photo and it was send back alive to live
another day.
Great catch Stan.
OCTOBER 2008
University student Kasey Leong made a short dash to Exmouth during
the uni break with 2 mates, picking up the 6.1m boat at the turn off
on his way up from Perth. The main mission for the trip was to pop
for GTs, Kasey got this 15-18kg GT from the back of the Ningaloo
Reef.
He was
using a Stickbait, kind of floating popper without the pop part in
under 4 m of water.
SEPTEMBER 2008 6 great
days were spent at Coral Bay by Brad Nel and visiting South African
mate Cliff Rudolph with my 5.3m boat this month. This big barracuda
caught by Cliff trolling at about 7 knots near South Passage is a
memorable fish. He was using a Halco Crazy Deep 7 metre lure.
This 8.15kg dhuie caught by Murray Rantall during the local comp
this month sure deserves the award. Using squid bait on a remodified
rig after experimenting with a few others he finally found one that
worked. landing several other fish including a 14kg samson fish he
won the comp easily.
On the
last day of a trip to Gnaraloo, with the 6.1m boat, Dave Allen
and crew were heading back to the bay probably about 10 km from
home and only 500mts from shore. With a couple of lures
out the back the Penn 850 that was connected to a skirt was in
big trouble as it screamed off many meters of braid. The fish
had gone a long way away from the boat, but Joe manoeuvred the
boat a bit closer to the fish which helped them regain a bit of
line. After about 10 mins, He had the fish alongside the boat,
“Wahoo, it’s a Wahoo” were the yells sending the fish off again
on one of it trademark runs. It went on 4 big runs before being
brought into the boat for some great photographs.
A trip to Gnaraloo Station was a
highlight for Paul Youngman this year. Fishing out of the 7.8m boat
he struck it lucky landing the biggest red emperor for the trip.
This 10kg fish hammered his bait during an afternoon glass off
during a week of superb weather.
