A trip to Gnaraloo Station was a highlight for Paul Youngman this year. Fishing out of the 7.8m boat he struck it lucky landing the biggest red emperor for the trip. This 10kg fish hammered his bait during an afternoon glass off during a week of superb weather.
Amongst a lot of good fish this month, Norm Davies 6.25kg snapper shown here wins it this month. Sitting on anchor with a good burly trail out the back, a floating mulie was snapped up making the old spinning reel Norm was using groan and complain. An extended fight eventually resulted in this well conditioned fish, making Norm a very happy angler.
A very difficult pick this month. Colin Willis had it for a short time with his big baldchin, and Brendan Mitchell was in the running with his 9kg red emperor, but I think Paull Weber with his 9kg pink snapper caught from the Sand Patch in the 5.3m boat on the little flick rod shown in the pic does it for me this month. Just anchored between cray pots, Paull and father in law Peter Roach, landed 4 snapper with the smallest still looking big against this massive 9kg fish. Well done Paull!
MARCH 2008 Every Easter weekend Daniel Kwek & mates come up from Perth and hire a boat for 4 days fishing. This year they had the 7.8m walkaround boat and found some new ground. They caught dhuies, snapper, red-throats, mackerel, tuna and the biggest coral trout ever caught from any of my boats. This 5kg fish is a fish of a life time for Daniel !
FEBRUARY 2008 During the Kalbarri Sports Fishing Classic at the end of this month, Westside Autos team of Paul Youngman, & brothers Steve & Bob Fowler aboard my new 7.8m walkaround boat had a burster of a day landing 5 mackerel on 4kg and 6kg line. Paul Youngman’s biggest mackerel shown here of 13.1kg caught on 4kg line won him the Highest Point Scoring Mackerel as well as Highest Point Scoring Game Fish. The team also took out Champion Boat Game over 7 metres, & Steve Fowler picked up Champion Angler Game. A very good result, well done guys.
Derek has hired one of the boats before, decided to buy his own boat, then owned a couple now and is considering selling it and going back to hiring as the most economical way to go as he did not use it enough. So he was up in Kalbarri with Lloyd, (on the right) and picked a great day to get among the macs. Trolling out from the ever reliable Sand patch they got 2 each and dropped a few for a very successful day.
Guy, Carl, Awhina and Honk were out in the 6.1 just before Christmas and were hoping for a mackerel or two. A double hook up saw Carl grab a rod and unfortunately bust off. The other lure hung on and we settled down to watch Awhina fight the fish in. She struggled and struggled until we realised that the fish might be bigger than expected. Well it turned out to be a shark about 5 foot long. She managed to bring it boat side with one of my hired 15kg outfits, but with all the thrashing and gnashing boat side the shark shook free, bust off and disappeared with the lure. Later a big bait out the back under a balloon went off with Carl grabbing the heavy 80lb braid outfit. All hell broke loose and they had to chase down the shark with the boat recovering a couple of hundred metres of line and then they sat it out until it came alongside, quick unhook, photos and release. Big fish Carl!
Doug Thomas works on a cray boat south of Geraldton, and just before the season started got together with mates, Tim Smith, Brian Smith and Peter Hocking. They took the 6.1m for 4 days and endured some pretty crappy weather, but stuck it out and brought some very good fish back each day. Fishing the whole time around my spots south of the river out from Natural Bridge, they experienced a few big bust-offs but landed snapper, blue-lined emperor, baldchin groper and this big estuary cod. Well done Doug!
Neil Raspa pictured above was up with his brother in law, Frank Cavicchio and were out in the 6.1m boat. Neil fishes a bit and told me about the huge tuna he caught in Hawaii, but he sure enjoyed catching this fish tucked under the cliffs from a burley trail. The weather was less than perfect so they did not go far, but a 13kg sambo on 7kg line was a blast for him.
SEPTEMBER 2007 Murray Johnson and mate Ross Cooke were out in the 6.1m boat early September. They had no expectations of catching tuna so late in the season, but at the end of a very quiet day, a school of tuna, dolphins and sharks erupted close by. Luckily they had a lure aboard and clipped it on quick smart and dragged it past the frenzy. The take was instantaneous and when the boat was turned to chase they found that the hooked fish had rejoined the feeding school and was feeding with them! When the fish saw the boat it bolted and the 45 minute fight was on! We done Murray a 26kg yellow-fin very late in the season. A fish of a lifetime.
AUGUST 2007 While out fishing with Dad, Bruce, and family Venissa Lee was drifting over new ground south of the cliffs in the 6.1m boat when the big bite happened. Struggling to lift the fish on 15kg gear and against the drift, she did well to land this beautifully marked estuary cod. The best fish she has ever caught.
JULY 2007 While looking for new ground this month during the school holidays son Ben took a big hit on his bottom gear in 38 metres of water south of the cliffs. The lightly weighted fresh fillet was the undoing of this over size estuary cod. If they are bigger than 30kgs or one metre in length they have to be released, so this fish was returned. A good catch and not so rare on new good ground. Well done Ben!
Big mackerel bite this month for Michael Ford and mate Dean. Anchored in close to shore with a burly trail out the back of the boat they were catching the odd snapper and bottom reef fish. A garfish floating out the back in the easterly wind under a bit of polystyrene foam was hit 5 times by mackerel. They kept these two releasing the others. Back on shore the lie detector showed that they both weighed in at 18kg each. Great fish on a spinning reel from anchor.
A thumper of a sand snapper or proper name, Painted Sweetlips, caught by Lou Parker from my 5.3m boat. Drifting in shallow water about 8 metres deep this hard pulling fish ambushed his bait. Struggling on his light 10lb braid outfit he was lucky to extract it out of the reef. Not that good to eat it was returned to where it came from. Well done Lou.
Here is a mate of mine, Craig Friend, who came all the way from Zimbabwe with the sole intention to fish, fish and fish some more. We spent a few days chasing different species, ending up with tuna, mackerel, snapper, baldchin groper, tailor, dhufish and this surprise catch. Trolling around big bait schools before the Sand Patch in 20 metres we failed to get a hook-up. Then out of the blue this 6kg mahi mahi took a King Brown Halco Laser Pro. It put up a spectacular fight on 6kg line, jumping out of the water multiple times on the initial hook-up.
My Sister in Law, Robyn, her husband Martin and kids Luke and Joe arrived from England this month and stayed a few days. The were here when a film crew were shooting some footage from my boat, so I did not have much time to take them out but a small window presented itself when the easterlies calmed off around 10am in the morning and we shot out in the 5.3m boat. We tried off Red Bluff, down the cliffs, the 3-mile then gave up but trolled all the way back to the entrance. This 17kg yellow-fin grabbed a lure 500m from Black Rock giving 10-year-old Luke the fight of his life. He did need a hand getting it in as he struggled with the 15kg gear he had to use, but did very well considering the power of these fish!
Stanley Wong and Paul Yong had a burster of a trip this month. Travelling all the way from Sarawak, Borneo for a holiday and hiring the 5.3m boat had a troll out from the Sand Patch. Paul had a mackerel before sun up and Stanley a 15kg yellow-fin shortly after. This is the first fish he had ever caught other than a few small red fish he caught in a charter out from Florida! He then went on to catch another one to thoroughly make his day. The group then went on to catch and release a couple of other 20kg fish.
This is the biggest yellow-fin tuna caught from any of my boats! Must have gone 35kgs plus. Dewayne made short work of it using 50lb braid but skipper Matt Radbund still had to chase it down with the dinghy. They had almost given up and were heading back from the Sand Patch when the strike came. Fantastic fish Dewayne, catch of a life time!
Stefan De Lucia is 11 and has been coming out each day this month to help his dad and me pull the cray pots. It was a nice day and we went for a troll for mackerel. Stefan has never caught one before and luckily, first up, he got a hit and landed this 8kg fish just our from the Sand Patch, making his day.
Fish were caught this month but no one sent me a legit. photo of their catch. However some people go to a lot of trouble to get included on this page. Here Rod Youngman sent me this pic of himself holding up his latest catch. I thought he deserved it, however A, he wasn't there and B, it is an American Catfish! Nice try Rod!
Peter Thompson was up with Derek early in the month having booked the 6.1m boat for 2 days a couple of months before. He split the days giving himself the best chance of striking a good day and with luck picked 2 fine days. The fist day out was a bit of a disappointment only picking up a few undersize snapper and a couple of break sea cods, (I blame the full moon) but they made up for it the second day landing a dhuie on the first drop, snapper and this huge cod that was released all down south of the river mouth out from Natural Bridge.
Detail is a bit sketchy but Darren Lamont was up with 4 mates, Wes Godridge, Mala, Scotty & Rooboy. They hired the 5.3m boat and it must have been a bit crowded with 5 on board but It was Rooboy's day when fishing up past Baldface he got the bite of the month extracting this double header of a 6kg baldchin groper and 4kg rankin cod between the 4 other guys.
Rhea Keane was out with her parents,
Mike and Siobhan. They had very little experience catching fish
but soon got the hang of it catching and releasing a procession of skippy.
When the mulloway started to bite Rhea was quick to get a couple
with this being her biggest of the two she caught.
Adam Fowler and mates Chad Swan and
brothers Jake and Marc Harrington hired the 5.3m boat and had a
shot at trolling, with Jake picking up his first ever mackerel.
Later they moved to the Red Bluff area for a bottom fish where
Adam got the bite of his life, landing this 7kg pink snapper
making his day. Although they were the only fish they caught
they sure were good fish as their smiles show!
This is a fish of a life time!
During our local comp on a very strong easterly Sue and I went up
to the Sand Patch and anchored in close setting a major burly
trail hoping for a snapper on light line. The morning was
spent either getting bust off time and time again or landing
little cods, skippy and tarwhine. Around lunch time the hit came
and I was resigned to another bust off as the line peeled off like
no tomorrow. Surprisingly it stopped and came back! I spent 40
minutes slugging it out eventually landing this 7.25kg snapper for
a pending state record on 2kg line.
This big mackerel was caught down at Port Gregory while Graeme Fraser was on anchor in the 6.1m boat. Graeme told me that he put his little Abu overhead out behind the boat with a mulie under a balloon. He was woken by a screeching run that really put his Abu to the test. Unfortunately the mackerel was unweighed but a very good fish for this area. The rest of the crew got stuck into a shark, dhuie and some skippy during a 1 day hire.
MARCH 2006 Keith Combe is the local plumber in town and with the Murchison River Mouth closed due to the floods took the opportunity to head out from Port Gregory. Leaving early, with mate Paul, to catch the morning bite time and knowing that coral trout were being easily caught trolling on a reef out from Hutt River headed there first. Within the first ten minutes this 67cm coral trout savaged a Halco 8m Crazy Deep lure. They caught another smaller one and then went on to catch big snapper and samson fish in deeper water.
Call me biased if you like, for entering my son, Jared, but it has been a quiet month so not many entrants! But Jared shown here is worthy of this spot. Fishing in a Kalbarri Offshore & Angling Club competition day aboard our 6.1m boat with a mate Steven, Sue and myself we first bumped into some mackerel. Steven fought one to the boat on 6 kg line but it was lost at the gaff. Then Jared landed one and then a second that turned out to be a broad-barred mackerel. A monster of the species at 9.5kgs. He is claiming a National and State junior line class record for 6kg line. This record has been approved now. We then went for a bottom fish. The spot was firing, we were catching fish on every drop and we were completely distracted when Jared called for the gaff! He had been slowly winding up this estuary cod for 10 minutes with his mini-winch and keeping fairly quiet about it! It weighed in at 20.25kgs. |
